DIY Dryer Vent Cleaning vs. Hiring a Pro in Baymeadows
What Baymeadows homeowners can clean on their own dryer vent, what needs a professional and what it costs. Dryer vent cleaning from $99.

Can you clean your own dryer vent? Partly. In Baymeadows homes, the screen, the hose and the outside hood are usually DIY-friendly. The duct running through the house is another matter.
The quick answer
| Part of the system | DIY? | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Lint screen | Yes | Clean it every load |
| Transition hose behind the dryer | Yes | Disconnect, clear lint, replace if crushed |
| Exterior vent hood | Usually | Clear debris and make sure the flap moves |
| Duct inside walls, floors or ceilings | Sometimes | Short straight runs only; long or bent runs need a pro |
| Roof-exit vents | No | Safety risk; leave it to a technician |
The homeowner part, step by step
- Lint screen: Clear it before or after every load, as the U.S. Fire Administration recommends. Wash it now and then if you use dryer sheets.
- Transition hose: Unplug the dryer (and shut off gas if it's a gas unit), pull it out, disconnect the hose and remove the lint. Swap out flimsy foil or vinyl hoses for the duct type your manual specifies.
- Outside hood: With the dryer running, check for strong warm airflow and a flap that opens fully. Clear out any lint, leaves or nesting material.
Why the hidden duct is the hard part
The section between the wall connection and the outside hood is where lint quietly builds up. Rotary brush kits can help on a short, straight line, but on longer runs they often push lint further in rather than pulling it out. Rods can also jam at an elbow, and you can't see a crushed or separated joint from either end.
Many Baymeadows homes and apartments route the dryer vent through an interior wall or up through the ceiling. Add Northeast Florida humidity, which makes lint damp and clingy, and that hidden duct can fill up faster than you'd expect.
Signs you've reached the limit of DIY
- Clothes still damp after a normal cycle
- The top of the dryer or the laundry room is unusually hot
- A burning smell during a cycle (stop and get it checked)
- Little or no airflow at the outside vent
- Lint collecting around the hood or behind the machine
